clients and users

Currently i am working on my program for my senior capstone project. I am researching who i want my clients and users to be and the problem i will need to address for both the kitchen and loft spaces. An associate for Viking Range Corporation has contacted me for the interior design of their latest location in the Fuqua building of downtown Baton Rouge. They are extremely excited about adding a 12th location to their list of cooking schools.
For the loft spaces, a Baton Rouge developer is looking to invest in the growing urban district of downtown and has enlisted my help. These luxury lofts will be a mixture of traditional and modern interiors geared more towards the business perfessional.

senior capstone idea...

For my senior capstone project, i am proposing a Viking Cooking School on the lower level of the Fuqua building, and a boutique hotel for the top floors. For the the entire Fuqua proposal, i will mix old with new, and incorporate a lot of natural light. I like the Idea of using the older building with a new purpose, as well as using shiny new materials alongside older fixtures. My two focuses will be historic preservation and materials.

For the Viking Cooking School space, i see stainless steel cook/preperation tables for the students, large wooden chopping blocks, and frosted blue/green glass. I want the space to be modern, with the latest cooking appliances and glass fixtures, but i also want to break up the coolness of the stainless steel with the warmth of wood panels.

For the boutique hotel space, i want to mix old and new furniture, while making the rooms feel more residential than your standard hotel. I like neutrals with unexpected pops of color.

A third idea that interests me is incorporating a contemporary florist/chocolate shop with unique breeds of flowers from all over the world and a chocolate counter, where each piece of chocolate is a work of art.

The Great Good Place

This reading was a little bit harder to read/follow along with. I get what they were trying to say, how people today don't socialize at all, they keep to themselves and have a lot more added pressure/stress than they really should, but i felt like they could have said it in fewer words. In the end, it was an interesting topic.
Ray Oldenburg stated that "there is little sense of place and even less opportunity to put down roots" in today's "automobile suburb"...he talks a lot about how the neighborhood taverns and corner stores are no longer present, so there is not a place to "hangout"; he believes that all of this combined is adding to people's seclusion. I liked the Gruen's story, how their lives in Los Angeles is completely different from their lives in Vienna. In Vienna they are persueded to go out often because of their easy access to their social surroundings.
Oldenburg also argues that we, americans, "proceed as though a house can substitute for a community if only it is spacious enough, entertaining enough, comfortable enough, splendid enough- and suitably isolated..." I don't feel as though, just because my family has a "spacious" house, we are substituting it for a social life, outside of the house. I still believe that there is a sense of community, maybe not everywhere, but in baton rouge. People are a little more reserved than they might have been in the past, but we are not completely inverted, like Oldenburg makes us out to be.

Just around the corner from our building is St. Joseph's Cathedral
Another Art Deco piece of detailing

The Wine Loft if directly across the street...a popular hang out/bar for locals.

The last three buildings on the block are 3 possibilities for our senior project. they are all vacant.

The name of the 1st floor shop (in our building).

I wanted to take this picture to show our building and to also get a picture of a mother and her child...to show that all different ages are present in this area.

I love bougenvillia (however it is spelled) and can picture it on a roof-top terrace!

This is a hotel lobby, that a woman invited us in to view, that is across the street diagonally from our building. it was very very formal...

THIS IS THE BEST BUILDING ON THE BLOCK!!! i fell in love with this building when i saw it...i love the mix of old and new!

A new bar is opening just across the street from our building.

a photography studio is just around the corner...which is very artsy and adds to the appeal of the block.

The art deco look of the facade of the building interested me.

When i first started to read the handout "Outside Lies Magic" i was like...."oh great, what is this boring handout going to be about". but after i wized through the reading i realized how intriguing the topic really was. It really channeled something inside of me and made me want to walk outside and EXPLORE! unfortunately, i have class to go out...i guess i'll explore later. When John Stilgoe started talking about how you can not explore while you are driving...i wondered "why". His point on how if you go too slow, you will cause a traffic jamb, and how you can't really take in the sight or smell of things were deffinitly true and brought up a really good point! Nature really is the "best kept secret" of all; i agree with him completely. The face that if you "walk under deciduous trees and notice that all the spots of sunlight on the walkways, whatever their different sizes, are the same shape" i NEVER would have noticed. In fact, in all of my 22 years of life, i have never begun to ponder the thought. I just went through life taking the smallest thing, like the shape or size of a tree shadow, for granted. I am really happy that this reading assignment was given to us, because i will keep everything i read in mind and try to make this the begining of my "exploration"!

On friday my group and I visited the classroom in Coates in which we will be designing. When we first walked in, all we could notice was the light yellow painted walls and tall ceilings. The classroom already had some good tables on casters, and because we have the $2,000 budget, we will be using those tables in our design. We took several pictures of the room and measurements, to help us work on the project. Some of the CXC workers answered questions and let us know what they needed. Our group then came up with our first space plan/idea of how we were going to design the space. This weekend we started to do research and order samples for our project.
